Why Grammar Should Be in Every Student’s Tool Kit

A friend frequently says that Grammar rules are like road signals on the highway. They clarify what people want to communicate in written format and avoid collisions or accidents (misunderstandings.) Imagine if your words are not communicating exactly what you mean. That is what happens when punctuation is not placed properly.  i.e. “Let’s eat, Jack” is not the same as saying “Let’s eat Jack.”  Capitalization, punctuation and correct word usage can make a story more comprehensible and interesting. It can separate writers, leaders, and educated people.

Here are the top ten reasons why your students should add Grammar to their tool kits:

  1. Be more confident in your communications.

  2. Be a know-it-all and correct your friends.

  3. Learning English grammar will help you learn a foreign language/understand its syntax.

  4. Good grammar makes you sound intelligent, educated and credible.

  5. Writing skill/ grammar comprises 25% of the overall score of the ACT or SAT standardized tests!

  6. Helps with College Application Letters.

  7. It helps to get a job or internship! Jobs require a cover letter.

  8. You WILL write in college. Almost every college requires a composition course.

  9. Upper division courses almost always require you to write papers.

  10. Finally, learn when to use “whom,” “effect,” “lie,” etc.
